Austin Stowell's introduction to Hollywood came with the popular role as ‘Jesse’ on “Secret Life of the American Teenager.” This role began as a single episode, but with Stowells’ character’s popularity, it became a 17 episode arc spanning two seasons.
Stowell burst onto the movie scene with the compelling portrayal of ‘Kyle’ in “Dolphin Tale” opposite Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr. and Ashley Judd. From the producers of “The Blind Side,” this inspirational true story follows a brave dolphin and the compassionate strangers who banded together to fight for her survival. Stowell` plays a wounded Marine, whose quest for his own rehabilitation and his strong bond with his young cousin, serves as the inspiration for building a prosthetic tail that saves the dolphin’s life. In its 2011 release, the Warner Brothers film was both critically acclaimed and widely received at the box office.
Soon after, Stowell made headlines again, by winning the lead role in “Love and Honor” in 2012. The 1960’s drama follows a young soldier in Vietnam who receives a ‘Dear John’ letter from his hometown girl. Together with his best friend (played by Liam Hemsworth), the soldiers go AWOL, returning to the States to win her back. There, they find a changed world and have to make the agonizing choice between love and duty.
Stowell is currently shooting both the comedy, “Parental Guidance Suggested,” opposite Selena Gomez and Steven Soderbergh’s “Behind The Candelabra,” an HBO film based on the life of celebrated pianist Liberace played by Michael Douglas.
Growing up in Connecticut, Stowell was a competitive athlete. After a sports injury sidelined him, he agreed to perform in a local theater production. It was there that Stowell discovered a passion for acting. Thanks to a college recruiter in the audience, he was offered a full scholarship at the UConn Department of Dramatic Arts. Shortly after graduating, Stowell moved to LA, where he currently resides.
