Roma Downey

Probably best known for her work in CBS‘s almost decade-long-running series "Touched by an Angel," Roma twice earned Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominations for her role as the softhearted angel Monica.  Originally from Derry, North Ireland, she grew up in the "troubles."  Her Father told her that her education would be her passport out and it was.  She studied at Brighton Art College as well as the London Drama Studio.   
 
Now, she not only acts, but she writes and produces as well. 
 
With a classical training by the early 90s, Downey had already added a number of theatrical productions to her résumé, including "Love's Labour's Lost" and "Arms and the Man" as well as "The Circle" for Broadway‘s Ambassadors Theatre.  Since then, she has performed in a national tour of "Playboy of the Western World" with Ireland‘s Abbey Theatre for which she earned a Helen Hayes Award for best actress and A Picasso at the Geffen Theatre in 2007. 
 
She starred in the Primetime Emmy winner "A Woman Named Jackie," a six hour miniseries in which she played the title role of Jackie Onassis.  She co-produced and starred in a number of highly rated CBS telepics, including "Second Honeymoon" with Tim Matheson "Borrowed Hearts" with Eric McCormack, "Monday After the Miracle" with Moira Kelly, "The Survivors Club" with Jacqueline Bisset, "Test of Love" and "The Sons of Mistletoe."  Other television movies include "Getting Up and Going Home", "Devlin," "Hercules and the Amazon Women" and "A Child is Missing" opposite Henry Winkler.  Most recently she appeared with John Schneider in "Come Dance at My Wedding" for Hallmark Channel. 
 
Downey has hosted Saturday Night Live and been a host for Pax on "It‘s a Miracle." 
 
In addition to her acting schedule, Downey has, since 1995, been the International Spokesperson for Operation Smile, a volunteer organization whose mission is to help improve the lives of children born with facial deformities.  Operation Smile has helped more than 120,000 children since its inception in 1982.  She travels on international missions to third world and developing countries as a volunteer raising awareness. 
 
Downey has authored a children‘s book, "Love is a Family," and recorded an album, "Healing Angel." 
 
Downey recently graduated from the University of Santa Monica with a M.A. in Spiritual Psychology.  Downey and her family currently reside in Malibu, California.
