Hoping to make a better life for herself, recent divorcee Dana Marshall (Lori Loughlin) and her son, Jared (Charles Henry Wyson), move across the country to live with Dana’s mother, Louise (Stefanie Powers), in California. When Jared's fourth-grade class is assigned to write letters to soldiers serving overseas, he finds a new friend, Vince (Johnny Messner). Jared’s letters hit home with Vince, and the two continue to write back and forth. When Vince returns on leave and decides to pay a surprise visit to his 10-year-old pen pal, his arrival has unexpected consequences.
